The name of the medical mineral water Šaratica has been derived from a colloquial name of the village Šaratice, which was one of the first places where Šaratica started to be sourced.
The origins of use of this sulpho-sodium-magnesium water by the general public are dated from 1888. The hydrothermal area, from which the mineral water is sourced, is situated between the villages Šaratice, Újezd u Brna and Židlochovice. Medical effect of the laxative water from this area has been known from the time immemorial; however, it was only at the end of the 90’s of the 19th century when a stronger spring was accidentally found. MUDr. František Veselý, a well-known physician from Brno, initiated chemical and bacteriological analyses of mineral water from this spring that were followed by clinical trials for confirmation of findings. Medical effects of Šaratica were provable to that extent that in 1896 the water was proclaimed medical water by c.k. district marshal on the proposal from the famous c.k. health council for the margraviate of Moravia.
A mineral water filling plant was opened in 1896 in the village of Šaratice and the bottled medical water was supplied to the shops in the Moravian region at first, but soon found its way also to Austria, Germany and France. Export to the mentioned countries was interrupted in the 40’s during the wartime events in Europe. Nowadays, export of this mineral water has been growing again, particularly to Slovakia and China. A bottle filling line was later relocated to the newly built plant in the village of Sokolnice. Following the nationalization in the 50’s the plant was incorporated into a natural spring state enterprise Moravskoslezská zřídla. On 1.7.1993, according to the contract concluded with the National Property Fund, the ownership rights to the plant in Sokolnice had been transferred to the company Helios Praha, s.r.o. However, in July 2002 bottling of the medical mineral water Šaratica was started by the company Ondrášovka s.r.o., which merged with the company MARILA BALÍRNY a.s. on 1.1.2006 and became one of its production plants. In 2007 the company MARILA was sold, a fundamental restructuring had been done and individual operations separated, including the mineral water production.
The manufacturer of the medical mineral water Šaratica as well as the mineral water Ondrášovka is the company ONDRÁŠOVKA a.s. at present.
